PLEASE DON'T BAG YOUR RECYCLABLES - Plastic bags are the #1 contaminant in recycling centers, causing equipment malfunctions and costly repairs.

All materials will be sorted at the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF). However, we do ask that plastic and glass containers, as well as bottles and other containers, be completely empty. Any food and trash should be placed in your regular garbage receptacle. Businesses and other commercial users should unload from the same area but near the rollup doors where our friendly employees will be ready to assist you.

Services

Many people choose not to recycle because they envision a process where they must have separate containers for glass, cans, plastics, etc. and conclude they just don’t have the space. But it does not have to be that difficult. Simply set aside a container in your home and comingle your recyclables, i.e., put everything in the same container. Then, swing by the MRF during our hours of operation when there is an attendant on duty or after hours where there are containers for self-service.

Clayton & Hurdle Disposal Service Inc. also offer recycling pickup services for a fee and take your recycling to our facility to be sorted; however they will not transport glass.

Confidential shredding services are offered to local business and individuals in the community for a contracted fee of $50 per 100 pounds of shredded material.

History

The Person County Recycling Center (PCRC) opened in June of 2009. PCRC is a Materials Recovery Facility that accepts comingled recyclables from Person County and surrounding counties. PCRC is owned and operated by Person Industries.

A Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is an enclosed building that contains equipment that can mechanically sort mixed recyclable material and bale it up for sale to the recycling market. The facility is made up of a series of conveyor belts and a mix of manual and automatic procedures to separate the materials and remove any unnecessary items.  PCRC is the first Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) run by people with disabilities.

Why Recycle?

Recycling is a process that allows materials that are considered to be waste to be collected and reprocessed into a new commodity. The benefits of recycling are enormous. Here are a few:

  • It brings down the need for raw materials which helps preserve our natural resources.
  • It helps eliminate waste, which effects the natural environment negatively.
  • It helps reduce pollution caused by waste. Rubbish releases harmful chemicals and greenhouse gasses.
  • It relieves the burden on land as it helps in clearing the spaces filled by waste.
  • It produces jobs that will help individuals and the overall economy.
  • It requires much less energy than that required by fresh manufacturing.
  • It can save communities money.
