Effective March 28, 2026, at 6pm, Person County prohibits all open burning across the unincorporated areas of Person County, including
within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The ban applies to all open burning regardless of whether a permit was issued.
The local ban follows an open burning ban issued by the N.C. Forest Service.
The purpose and intent of this ordinance is to hereby establish a uniform system of road naming and renaming along both public and private roads. It also provides for a uniform system of addressing and numbering all structures within the jurisdiction of the County, and to establish a process for changing existing addresses and road names so that street, road, and highway names are not duplicated, or phonetically similar, in the County. The ordinance provides a method to correct inaccurate addresses that will help to greatly improve emergency service response to all parts of the County.
An additional purpose of this ordinance is to ensure that road name identification signs are placed at all road intersections. It also establishes a procedure for reviewing road names. This is necessary to facilitate public safety and emergency response service in locating properties and structures for service to the public.
Our local ordinance requires reflective address signs with numbers at least three inches in height for homes and six inches in height for businesses. Address signs may be purchased from your local volunteer fire department or sign shop. Reflective peel and stick numbers are available at most hardware stores.
For most homes, address numbers on both sides of the mailbox are sufficient. Mailbox numbers must be a minimum of three inches in height and visible in all lighting and weather conditions. If your home is not visible from the road or on a long driveway shared with others, please post additional address numbers along the driveway and/or on your house.
