About Rabies
- Rabies is a fatal viral disease affecting the central nervous system
- Spread through saliva and nervous tissue of infected animals
- Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal
- There is no cure
- Rabies cannot be tested on a live animal
- Testing requires examination of brain tissue postmortem
What is the State Law?
All dogs, cats and ferrets are required by North Carolina law (NC General Statute 130A-185) to have a current Rabies vaccination at the age of 12 weeks (3 months) of age and no later than 16 weeks (4 months) of age. A licensed Veterinarian can administer Rabies vaccinations at 12 weeks of age or older.
Dogs and cats are required by North Carolina Law (NC General Statute 130A-190) to wear a Rabies tag at all times.
This includes strictly "indoor only" pets and outdoor cats as well. Keep your rabies certificate in a safe place and know when your pet's vaccination expires, so you can get a new vaccination BEFORE it expires.
