We are not a “No Kill” shelter. This terminology can be harmful to the efforts of shelters, as the expectation is that shelters either “always” or “never” euthanize any animals.  Our shelter is a community focused shelter, meaning we do humanely euthanize at our shelter when animals are aggressive towards animals or people, have serious medical or behavioral conditions that may make them unadoptable or have a poor quality of life. We will not place animals in a home who show behaviors which may be a known or strong potential for injury to a person or animal, including the animal in question.  We do our absolute best to try and place as many animals in homes or rescues, but sadly, we are not able to do this one hundred percent of the time due to many different circumstances. 

We are open most Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for adoptions only.  However, some Saturdays we may be at a different location for Adoption or other Community Events.  Please be sure to call before Saturday to find out more details!

First, give the owners 24 hours to have a chance to find it. If it has tags, try to locate the owners. Take the pet to a local shelter, veterinarian or the Person County Microchip Scanning Station to scan for a microchip as well.

Contact the shelter at 336-597-1741 as soon as you realize your pet is missing. We may ask you to send photos for identification, in the event your pet is brought to the shelter. Post flyers in your community, post on local apps such as Nextdoor, Ring Neighbors app, Facebook, etc. as well as notifying nearby veterinarians and neighboring county shelters.

All strays are held for a minimum of 3 business days, as mandated by the State of North Carolina. Owner Surrenders may be immediately released for adoption, rescue, or may be humanely euthanized with documentation of proof of ownership. ALL animals undergo a medical and behavioral evaluation before any decision is made on their outcome. Please note that if the shelter is reaching or above capacity, animals may be transferred to a rescue or foster for care during their hold period.

We are not Animal Control and cannot provide in-home services. If you have a stray, you will need to contact the non-emergency dispatch line for Person County Sheriff Office and Roxboro Police Department at 336-597-0545.

Owners are responsible for transporting trapped cats or their own pets to the shelter for surrender or Rabies Vaccines.

Please contact the shelter at 336-597-1741. We may be able to provide assistance, or provide resources to help you keep your pet in your home. If you are unable to keep or rehome your pet despite these resources, you must follow our Owner Surrender Procedure for surrender.
